We built a fire and filmed it as we realised after previously filming our work seemed to dark so we needed something to brighten it up. We filmed the fire and we plan to use it as transitions possibly using the cross fader on final cut. Hopefully this will look very effective in our video.

Ideas for video

This video is like many trance videos it is very fast paced and many cuts are used within it. We got inspiration for our video as all the way through the video the characters seem to be running we thought we could use this in our video to try and show that the characters in our video are trying to run away from their fears.

We created a questionnaire to hand our to potential viewers of our music video, we did this in order to get a wider perspective of ideas from other people outside of our group, with a wide range of taste in music genres. From these results we can see that most people like the trance/pop genre of our music video and that 90% of people asked watch a music video for entertainment, from these results we know to make the video entertaining. We additionally know that the audience would like us to use props such as paints, glow paints photos and objects in relation to the lyrics of the song. We have also learnt that the audience would lie us to use frequent shots of the main artist, but not for this to be the main focus of the music video, we would combine the artist shots with a range of medium, close up, pan and zoom shots. Most people also expect a trance music video to use transitions combined with a narrative and the footage to be in relation to the lyrics and genre of the song. Finally, the viewers would like to see the mise-en-scene to include a beach, a forest or a party scene most. After these more important surroundings people would enjoy seeing colourful outfits which change throughout the video, dance routines, exaggerated make up, well used lighting, flashbacks and colourful surroundings. From this questionnaire we have found that the audience has similar ideas to our initial ideas, and we would like to both include and elaborate on these ideas during the creation of our music video.

Audience Profile

The audience for our music video is going to be teenagers as that is the age group of the type of trance genre is aimed at, as teenagers like quite up beat fast pace music and thats what 'bruised water' is like. We are going to aim our music video towards teenagers by using the setting as a beach as we think this is a place were teenagers can relate to and most likely go to. The teenage age is around 13-19 so as a bigger age range we need to think carefully about not making our video too young or too old.

Change in song remix

We looked for different versions of the song for bruised water, and we decided to use this one as it is faster and more up beat and has a longer beginning so we could include our flash backs at the beginning for the first minute.

Initial Ideas

Risk Assessment

Risk Assessment

When filming our music video we will all have to consider the risks involved before filming it. For instance, when we are first on the beach we will have to make sure the tide doesn’t look like its going to come in and we will have to make sure that wherever we lay down there isn’t any glass etc… that we could cut ourselves on. Also we will have to walk around the areas of Crimdon that we are shooting in and make sure there is nothing in our way that we could fall or trip over. As we are filming in the surroundings of trees and the wooded area also, we will have to walk round the area before we start to make sure there isn’t any logs or twigs that we could fall over as we run onto the beach in our video, this will make us be aware of our surroundings and the dangers we may face if we don’t plan out our sequence’s properly. As we are making a fire for our music video when we are in the woods, we will have to be careful that it doesn't get out of control or over the top that we can't handle it, as this will be dangerous. We will also have to watch out for each other when filming, as we won’t want the person who is filming being knocked over by one of the actors and then damaging the camera equipment. We will have to plan out were the person who is filming is going to stand after every shot to make the shooting and running of it flow into each scene of the music video, so we make it look as professional as possible.

Inspiration: Ke$ha- Take it off

This video by Kesha has inspired us to use glow paints as an effect as on it you can see by these screen grabs the paint being thrown about and i think that this will look good in our music video to show the hurt of each character and by throwing paint round etc... will relieve the stress that they are under and then will be able to see each characters personality by the colour of the paint that they throw. For example if one character throws red paint, then it will show that she needs love in her life or maybe has occurred heartbreak in her life which is brought out by the paint colour red.

Breakdown of Lyrics

Instrumental (0-1:00)

My skin is like a map, of where my heart has been (0.58-1:04)
And I can’t hide the marks, but it’s not a negative thing (1:06-1:11)
So I let down my guard, drop my defenses, down by my clothes (1:12-1:18)
I’m learning to fall, with no safety net, to cushion the blow (1:19-1:25)

I’ve found your finger prints on a glass of wine (1:29-1:33)
Do you know you’re leaving them all over this heart of mine too (1:36-1:41)
But if I never take this leap of faith I’ll never know (1:42-1:48)
So I’m learning to fall with no safety net to cushion the blow (1:49-1:55)

I bruise easily, so be gentle when you handle me (1:56-2:02)
There’s a mark you leave, like a love heart carved on a tree (2:03-2:10)
I bruise easily, can’t scratch the surface without moving me (2:11-2:17)
Underneath I bruise easily, I bruise easily (2:18-2:25)

My skin is like a map, of where my heart has been (2:27-2:32)
And I can’t hide the marks, but it’s not a negative thing (2:34-2:39)
But if I never take this leap of faith I’ll never know (2:41-2:47)
So I’m learning to fall, with no safety net, to cushion the blow (2:48-2:54)

There’s a mark you leave, like a love heart, carved on a tree (3:02-3:08)

Instrumental (4:52-5:54)

Analysis of the lyric breakdown

Due to the fact we have chosen a remix within a remix finding the lyrics online were difficult and the words in this remix had been changed slightly so it was harder to work out the timings. As you can see there is around two minutes during the beginning and end of the song which we shall use for our flashbacks, as our video will be narrative it will help relate our beginning and end together as the same music in the beginning is repeated at the end.

9 frame analysis

I chose to do my nine frame analysis on the song if i were a boy by Beyonce. Due to the fact the video has a memorable narrative. Also this video proves the fact of how important music videos are today since if the video has not been watched the song will not make as much sense. The scene is set as Beyonce starts the morning getting breakfast in this shot we can see the dominant character is the woman as she is stood up towering above the man. Which is a change from the generally dominant male which is shown in most music videos. The lighting is dark and it is in black and white which makes us focus on the characters instead of the room in which they are in. Personally at this point we find the woman ignorant as the man has made breakfast for her but instead of sitting down with him she is eating hers in what seems to be a rush. This shot is a Medium close up and uses deep focus so we can see everything that is occurring.

The second shot i have chosen is one which shows the woman character in a very masculine uniform. Police officers are generally seen as a masculine role. We see that the character is confident within ones self as she puts her hat on at a jaunty angle. This meat shot is shown as the character is shown as expressionless, and almost bored with what is going on around her. Again this is a medium close up of Beyonce so we can see her facial expressions.

This next shot shows the male character at work i chose this because of the body language shown in it. The woman in the scene is trying to attract the males attention however he is shown as oblivious to her advances. Her full attention is on him she is also looking at him, however he is ignoring her and is blatently focused on something else. This shot is an establishing shot so we can see everything that is happening.

Shot 5 is the a contrast to the previous shot i have just explained, due to the fact the body language from both the characters are completely different. Unlike the husband on the previous one with the woman, the wife with this man in this shot are very close, and looking into each others eyes, each is smiling and are paying each other large amounts of attention. Looking at this shot you can see sexual attraction. However as a viewer we do not like this shot as we know that the husband is at work looking for a present for his wife and she is been like this with this man. This shot is a closeup.

This shot proves there is definitely sexual attraction between the two characters. However the woman who has been shown as particularly masculine, however now we see a hint of her femininity as voyerism has been used as the man is seen as looking at her in a admiring way as she is bent over the car. This shot is a Low angle shot.

In this scene you see a close up of the wife and the man the viewers think that she is having an affair with. This shot proves that an affair is occurring, as throughout the video we have seen them getting closer and closer. And now the inevitable has happened you can see in this shot there this is more then a friendly relationship occuring between these two characters.

In this shot we gain a realisation of the meaning behind the video, we see the husband in the police uniform and that what we had previously seen was simply a role reversal between the wife and the husband. This shot is a medium close up similar to the one shown previously that i explained when beyonce was in the police uniform, again this medium shot has been used to show the expressions of this man.

Finally in this shot we understand the story and we know what is going to happen as we see what previously happened with the wife and the man we thought she was having a affair with laughing and joking in the police car. Whilst now we see the husband and the woman we know her will have an affair with. I think this video is an extremely effective video. This is a medium close up using deep focus so again we can see the mans expression.

Finally the video ends as it began with a meat shot of Beyonce, the grey scale shot creates a feeling of misery. A lot of repetitiveness and links between shots are used throughout this video and this is one of them. She has a very natural look about her since it seems she has no makeup on again perhaps showing that she is upset.

Inspiration for flashbacks

This has inspired us to do the flashbacks within our video and have the sound of heels throughout our video as a sound motif.

Our ideas have changed slightly from our previous ideas so consequently so has the costumes above shows a basic idea of the costumes we shall be making.

This is the list of makeup we will need to create the effect like on the youtube video we have posted previously on our blog.

These are design ideas for our dresses in the forest scene these dresses will be knee legnth long and off white. We will create an old effect to the dresses by mixing the white fabric with teabags. These dresses will be wrapped around the characters in an almost greek goddess like fashion. When the fire scene comes on the characters who in the forest scene had white dresses white contacts and a zombie like feel to them, will unwind the white dresses to show black shorter dresses beneath. They will also have black contact lenses in to show that the characters sadness is now turning into anger. We have designed the dresses like this to show that the characters are been released from all there problems and are overcoming them. It will be seen as symbolic when the dresses are thrown into the fire. We are planning on designing and making our own costumes.

we wrote a list of the items of costume which would be needed in our video.

Inspiration for makeup in our Video

We have been trying to think outside the box and think about how we can adapt our genre, to intrigue the audience and give them something that is not typically found in this particular genre. We have been inspired by this video to try and recreate it in our music video. However we wont have the blood and the black lines on the face. But since our music video is performance and amplification video as well as a narrative one, we thought this would work extremely well. However instead of just having the makeup looking like eyes on top of the lids. When our characters open their eyes they will also have contact lenses in so it will be a shock to the audience and be exceptionally effective. The idea behind this makeup is to almost create an effect in which butterflys use when trying to protect themselves to stop them getting harmed. They have large eye like patterns on their wings making them look like they are bigger, scarier creatures then what they are to scare predators away. Our characters are putting on this front and they look scary so as to make themselves unapprochable and so they cannot be hurt no more. Because people generally put on a front when they are upset so as no questions are asked as into the reason as to why they are upset.

Practice Music Video

I enjoyed practicing creating a music video, as it got me familiar with the software i would be using and i also realized how time consuming editing was so it helped me create a realistic time table for the real video i shall be creating. I used a lot of affects throughout my practice video i tried to use amplification, as well as making it a contradictory video as to making it irrelevant to the lyrics been sang.

Inspiration from other music videos

I took inspiration from this video because i appreciated the originality behind it. However in my work i do not intend to replicate this dance but hopefully manipulate that dance into our own.

To whom it May concern;

We are media students currently studying at Hartlepool Sixth Form College. We are interested in using your song ‘ Bruised Water’ in our work, which will consist of us creating a music video and try to attempt to portray the music in an original way. We are hoping to create a performance-based video, in which we are contemplating on also including a narrative within. Our initial ideas consist of five individuals painted in blue and purple glow paint, in which we have tried to represent, the hurt they are feeling on the inside shown on the outside. So mental scarring shown on the outside thus relating to the lyrics ‘ I bruise easily’. We also are planning to attempt dancing within our video, but jerky so you can see our characters are hurting. The beginning of the video we plan to have our characters dressed casual looking over a cliff and next they are lying in different locations they then head towards the beach at the end you see them walk into the sea and when they are walking out the sea they are normal again. As if their worries and pain have been washed away. The camera will be on top of the cliff filming the characters walking out the sea thus relating to the beginning of the video where the characters are looking down. Thus leaving the viewer wondering who is watching them leaving the narrative ending on an actual cliffhanger. The costumes are bright blue glow paint with purple bruises their makeup will consist of large eyelashes to extenuate the eyes which will have white contacts in. Perhaps representing that they are blind to everything around them and focused on only the hurt in which they are feeling. Also running black mascara will be used. Backcombed hair and black dresses with slits in showing red glow paint representing more scars on the inside. We have decided to create our characters in a kind of trance due to the fact the genre of music is trance. As you can see we have planned our video thoroughly and would be extremely grateful if it would be at all possible to use your song. Our finished product will be professionally finished and further contribute to the popularity of your song.

Yours sincerely,

Jasmine Graham, Coral-Anne Houghton, Grace Peel.

Proof of asking for permission

We got in contact with chicane when wanting to ask for permission to use their song by sending them a letter in a message on the social networking site myspace.

Inspiration for movement.

We got inspiration as odd as it may seem from this speeding advert due to the fact of the grotesque stiff movements shown by the girl. We were inspired to use this because we find it relates to our video because the characters in it are harmless but due to the way they look people find them quite disturbing to watch just as the little girl in the video. We thought this would be extremely effective in our music video.

Music Video analysis

This album does not feature the artists upon it. However this creates a feeling of curiosity for the viewer as if they do not know who the band looks like they will wonder what they will look like when listening to their music. Therefore by doing this creating more interest by the viewer. This is their debut album so there name is central and in bold capital letters showing that, that is what the point of focus is. The colours in the background are a sepia , yellow tinted like colour, to try and make all the attention be on the bands name which is in bright white.

Monday, 21 June 2010

Katy perry's album is named ' one of the boys' however the album cover looks very feminine with the artist in a bikini like top and surrounded by flowers which are a feminine icon. The font in which her name is also very feminine and is in pink. The front of this cover is very complimentry when regarding the colours used within it. However unlike the artists name that is in pink the album name is in blue,'one of the boys'. Therefore subtly showing the traditional views of pink for girls and blue for boys. The artist and her name and album name are placed in the central of the cover, thus showing that this is katy perry and this is her album, very blatantly. The relationship between the text and images use juxter position due to the fact the album is called 'one of the boys', however everything is feminine she has not attempted to look masculine and be 'one of the boys'. The iconography shown in this image it can be suggested that the music will be aimed more at the female audience and that the record player in the right hand corner may suggest that it will be pop music in which consists in this album. And that it will possibly be mainstream as there is a radio on it suggesting her songs will be popular and be played on the radio. There is a white picket fence in the background which are very common in america perhaps subtly showing that the artist is american.

Christina Aguilera has been in the spot light for many years and is well known for her provacative music videos and raunchy album covers. However now as she is getting older i think she has gone for a more mature look and made the album cover look provocative but in a mature manner. For example it looks like she is laying in a bed she is looking right at the camera and has bright red lipstick on. I believe that the album cover name, 'back to basics', relates to the album cover itself as the album cover is basic also. Her name is smaller then the album cover itself thus showing that by her photo people will recognise her instantly anyway without having to read her name.

This album is called 'the fame' by lady gaga. It was one of her first albums so this is possibly explaining her rise to fame. She has big glasses on which are usually associated with fame. She is a new artist so this is more then likely why she is the main attraction on the album cover and her name stands out, thus letting people know who she is and what she is about.
